The Challenge 67’ is an iconic world-girdling metal mile-muncher, and WHIRLWIND is part of a fleet put together by Sir Chay Blyth that one-design raced around the world against prevailing winds and currents. They are unbeatable for sail training and adventure sailing, and this yacht is maintained to standards that make her suitable for this use. She is operating commercially now, with many updates and a strenuous maintenance program. She is in use now and offers an extraordinary amount of capability.
RCD Status: Our understanding is that the yacht is exempt from the essential safety requirements of the Recreational Craft Directive as she was built and placed into use within the EU prior to 1998.
Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:
- The yachts were designed to be exceptionally strongly built of steel in order that they could face all that the Southern Ocean might throw at them, with absolute confidence. The hulls are constructed of high tensile steel shell plating over “T” bar longitudinal and angle ring frames.
- Above the waterline the hull and deck are lined with approximately 60 mm of sprayed Polyurethane foam to provide thermal and sound insulation.
- Hull Shell Plating & Stringers: 50A Steel – British Steel.
- Hull & Deck Framing: 43A Steel - British Steel.
- Deck, Deckhouse, Coamings & Plinths: 316 Stainless Steel - British Steel.
Keel & Rudder:
- 12 tonne cast Iron keel by Iron Brothers Ltd.
- 16 x 30mm Keel bolts.
- A full depth skeg and ertalite bearings provide support for the steel rudder and good engineering ensures absolute reliability. Ertalite bearings changed in 2022.
