We are all familiar with Discovery Yachts and their well-proven bluewater track record, but when the owner of BUZ TOO commissioned his Discovery 58, he set out to raise the bar by optimising every aspect of the yacht to meet his exacting requirements. From the tip of the mast to the tip of the keel, every component was carefully researched and, where possible, upgraded, including a Doyle Stratis sail wardrobe, Selden mast with custom carbon furling boom, high-spec Dyneema running rigging, Atlas carbon davits, an uprated air conditioning system capable of running overnight on battery power, a four-cabin layout, JP3 cable steering for direct and positive helm response, and twin autopilots, all alongside the full suite of bluewater equipment expected on a world-circling, ocean-ready yacht. The owner’s no-compromise approach to the design and build of BUZ TOO has resulted in one of the finest and most recent Discovery 58 yachts available. Due to family health considerations, the planned circumnavigation can no longer proceed, and BUZ TOO is now reluctantly on the market.
RCD Status: The yacht conforms with the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25EC or RCDII (2013/53/EU as appropriate (Recreational Craft Directive) and is categorised A – “Ocean”.
Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:
- Composite construction with high density foam core providing exceptional stiffness and insulation. Laid up with vacuum technology for complete structural integrity.
- Vinylester resins are used throughout the hull for added strength and osmosis prevention.
- 2 x Layers of epoxy applied to hull as a barrier against moisture ingress.
- A layer of Kevlar for added impact resistance in the forward area of the hull.
- Carbon fibre used in high load areas of the hull structure for added strength.
- Watertight bulkheads forward and aft providing sealed buoyancy and safety.
- Hull colour Black Blue RAL 5004, boot top gel coat twin colour Discovery Red RAL 3020 lower White, cavita line in Gold vinyl.
- Copper coat antifoul. Lift out, hull polish, touch up and refresh of copper coat April 2025.
- Composite construction deck with sandwich core providing strength and stiffness with thermal and acoustic insulation resulting in a strong but light deck.
- All load-bearing areas have marine-ply core and stainless steel or aluminium backing plates for added strength.
- Hull to deck is joined with an overlapping flange, using urethane acrylate paste and stainless bolts for strength.
- All bulkheads are over-bonded to the deck for strength and stiffness.
- Twin vertical hull port lights to both sides of hull in Owners cabin.
- Mixed plank PermaTeak on all flat deck surfaces, capping rail, transom steps and bathing platform – difficult to distinguish from real teak, virtually maintenance free and can be jet washed.
- Hydraulic transom door/bathing platform with custom carbon fibre bathing ladder
- Twin forward facing opening saloon windows
- Custom Atlas electric carbon fibre davits rated at 375kg each.
Keel & Rudder:
- External lead keel - 10,000kg (22,000lb).
- Ron Holland designed a high-performance keel, specifically shaped to provide maximum performance, stability, and comfort.
- Semi balanced large Kevlar reinforced rudder.
